Draw a Bird Day – Enchanted

I had planned to post a different drawing, but the photo was mired in blue shadows that I couldn’t whisk away with Photoshop. So, I’m going with my ink drawing from Day 7 of Inktober. The drawing is already on my Instagram page, so to add a little newness to this post, I messed around with the colours of the drawing in Photoshop.

I was inspired by the large numbers of Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets who migrated through Burlington last week. It was enchanting to walk by trees and bushes filled with these perpetually moving feathered fairies.

For the last drawing, the orange happened to be my current background colour setting in Photoshop. Why? I can’t remember. I thought I’d give it a whirl to be extra bold. And then I picked two more bold colours that seemed to provide an interesting contrast. A little too garish? I used the Colour Picker and Paintbucket tools to change the colours. The lines in the drawing are a bit rough and have unexpected breaks, so the extent of many of the colour fills depends on the location of the tiny line breaks.

  2. What a delight to see all these charming little birds, flitting and perching at all these different angles! Although I like the blue the best, I must admit that the bold orange and purple version is an exciting variation!

    • Thanks 😊💕!!! They’re even more delightful “in person”. One vote for the blue! It’s fun to have the option to change the colours easily. I like the colour variations of the bold one, but I’m not quite comfortable with the colours. It may be an experiment to play with a little further.

  4. I like the last one best, and the breaks in line are really good. They give it life and movement. You’ve really captured the feeling of these little cuties, bopping about the branches. It would never occur to me to take a drawing and play with it the way you have here. I love it!

    • It looks like the bold one is in the lead! Woohoo! Thanks for your comments about line breaks, life and movement. I tried to be a little “flourishy” and not super controlled when I drew my lines. I’ve seen a lot of illustrations were artists mix hand drawn line drawings and digital colouring. So many possibilities and changes can be so easily undone. There are also methods to make the lines look smoother when turning a physical line drawing into a digital one. I’ve tried a couple, but I’ve forgotten how to do it now. Maybe I’ll look it up again some day. 😊💕

      • That is interesting because I’ve seen that with my plant drawings when I upload them onto my computer. The lines looks smooth in the original, and shockingly broken on the screen. In my case it definitely does NOT add life and movement. 😦 I’d love to find a way to correct it. I just use the software that came on my computer, though, so probably don’t have that function. Oh well.

  5. Lucky you, for seeing an entire fleet of “feathered fairies,” Myriam. I can’t help but smile whenever I see kinglets. I like your drawings, and it looks like fun to play with so many different colors.
